Christmas stockings, are one of my favorite parts of Christmas Day. I love to have a bunch of fun little gifts that are perfect for each family member. We always have a mix of fun gifts, necessities, and holiday traditions. Any ye, everyone gets a stocking! never too young or too old and pets are included too.
Teen boys are the hardest to shop for. Ask them and they’re of no help. So I brainstormed (along with help from my own teenager and his friends) to come up with over 200 fabulous ideas to fill your teenager’s stockings. Save to Pinterest and share with your friends because they’re probably struggling with ideas too. If you have ideas that we should add, please let us know in the comments…we’re all in this together #momsofteenagers
This has been been of our MOST popular posts and our top Gift Guide since we first wrote it in 2020 – we’ve been busy updating it for 2023 bringing you the best ideas for those teens. A lot of these ideas are great for tweens and college kids too.
Don’t forget about dollar stores – I always make a run to the dollar store for more stocking stuffer fillers. Perfect after you’ve spent money on the bigger gifts (teens and their love of electronics and designer sneakers get expensive)
Does your family put oranges in the Christmas stockings? Ever wonder where the tradition started?
Why do we put oranges in our Christmas stockings?
The tradition started during the Great Depression when many families couldn’t afford Christmas gifts. Sweet fruits like oranges were hard to come by and it was a special treat to get in your stocking on Christmas day. Oranges were an exotic fruit grown in warmer climates so it was especially a treat in the colder areas.
The tradition is also tied to the legend of St. Nicholas, who gave 3 gold balls to a man who couldn’t afford to marry off his daughters. The legend is that he tossed the gold balls down the chimney where they landed in the daughters’ stockings. To honor the legend, people gifted oranges instead of gold balls. Later, the oranges began to be replaced with small toys and the version of Christmas stockings that we now know.
Parenting tip – This one is great, especially for younger kids. Even on Christmas Day, my son will sleep in. Do your kids wake up too early on Christmas day? Have Santa leave their stockings at the foot of the bed for them to open when they wake up. This will help keep them in their bedrooms longer so that you can sleep in (since we all know parents have been up all night assembling toys and wrapping).
