May the 4th Be With You – Star Wars Inspired Cake Designs

By: Dana Michele

May 4th, the unofficial Star Wars Day. Love seeing all the Star Wars blog posts being shared all over social media. I was inspired to share mine after seeing so many creative creations.

3rd Birthday Star Wars Inspired Cake

I’m sharing a few Star Wars inspired cake and cupcake designs that I created over the years when I owned my cake business, Simply Sweets. Star Wars cakes are not just for kids – I’ve made them for many adults too.

Pro Tip: My customers often requested black and silver for the cakes but black icing has its challenges because it’s messy and can stain your mouth. You have to use a lot of dye to turn the icing black.  I have two tips for this: The first is to use Americolor gels – these are best when you need to color icing a very vibrant or dark color. The second tip is to airbrush the black. This is a more advanced decorating skill, but if you have an airbrush, this is the time to use it. There are also some single-use airbrush colors in a can so you don’t need an airbrush – I’ve had mixed results with these but can work in a punch. The best solution for this I found is to color the icing gray and airbrush it black – plus you can add a bit of pearl to the airbrush for a more galactic glow.

Notice the fondant letters in the Star Wars font? Unfortunately, I can’t give you advice on how to do that now because the software I used is no longer available but sharing since so many have asked.  I used Sure Cuts a Lot software to control a Cricut Cake. A Cricut Cake a specialty food-safe Cricut machine designed to cut sheets of fondant. The software, however, no longer supports Cricut machines. If Cricut has a similar font, this would be the best solution (I’m not aware of one). Work-around – cut patterns out and cut the fondant with an Exacto knife.

Want a super simple way to create Star Wars cupcakes? You can purchase light saber cupcake toppers – while they’re not edible they’re super simple and a quick solution. Use black or silver cupcake liners. Add some star-shaped sprinkles or black and silver sprinkles (jimmies or non-perils).
