Nature Scavenger Hunt + Build Your Own Trail Mix Bar

By: Dana Michele

Want to get the kids out of the house? A break from electronics? A game that involves science, exercise, and fresh air? A Nature Scavenger Hunt is the perfect solution. For even more fun, create a Build Your Own Trail Mix Bar snack idea.

Gather up the kids, put on some good hiking shoes, grab a water bottle or a hydration water pack and you’re off. Don’t forget to pack the snacks.

If you have a larger group, divide into teams and see who finishes first. Print out the NatureScavengerHunt or even create your own.

We thought it would be fun to take photos of each of the items on the list. A few people in your group probably have a smartphone with a camera making it easy to document your progress. Also, it’s better to leave nature undisturbed rather than collecting it as part of the scavenger hunt.

Make a ‘Build Your Own Trail Mix’ Bar

Step 1 – Purchase a variety of mixins for your buffet. I used Goldfish crackers, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, dried apples and dried apricots.

Step 2 – Gather a bunch of bowls and spoons or scoops

Step 3- Add the snacks to the bowls. If you’re feeling creative make up some fun labels.

Step 4 – Give everyone a snack bag to fill with their own Trail Mix creation.

Trail Mix Mixins Ideas

  • pretzels – thin sticks, braids, nuggets
  • yogurt covered pretzels
  • chocolate covered pretzels
  • peanut butter filled pretzels
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Wheat thins
  • nuts – peanuts, almonds, walnuts
  • dried fruit – raisins, cherries, blueberries, mango, apple, pineapple
  • banana chips
  • crystallized ginger
  • M&Ms and peanut M&Ms
  • dried coconut chips
  • Asian crackers
  • wasabi peas
  • corn nuts
  • chocolate chips
  • chocolate covered raisins
  • sunflower seeds
  • pumpkin seeds
  • breakfast cereal – cheerios, Chex

What would you put in your mix?
