San Diego Road Trip, Here We Come!

By: Dana Michele

My favorite road trip destination is San Diego – and if you’re a regular reader of Sweet Shoppe Mom, you already know that. From Phoenix, it’s an easy 5-6 hour drive.

Palm Trees La Jolla Shores

I went to college in San Diego (University of CA – San Diego). I lived in San Diego for another 10 years after college (Pacific Beach and Carlsbad). My son was born in San Diego (La Jolla). San Diego has a lot of great memories. My son was too young to remember when we lived there, but it’s his favorite place to visit – he loves the beach and all the awesome family attractions.

We have Fall Break in early October so it’s the perfect time to plan a visit. Perfect weather (isn’t it always??) and less crowded. So perfect that it coincides with the Kids Free San Diego. 100+ San Diego Attractions that are FREE for kids during the month of October.

So excited to see the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway on the Kids Free list. My son was only two months old on our last trip to the zoo so that’s a must see and neither of us has been to the USS Midway. Also excited to see so many kids eat or stay free options on the list – we gotta sleep and eat while we’re there.

La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station

We always schedule some beach time. Relaxing, playing in the sand, walks along the beach breathing in the fresh ocean air.

Pt Loma Lighthouse

We also love exploring the tidepools – our favorites are near Point Loma Lighthouse and Swami’s State Beach in Encinitas when the tides are right (and the only reason you’ll get me out of bed at 5 am when on vacation). It’s so awesome to see sea anemones and starfish in their natural environment.

Check out San Diego’s website to see the over 100+ attractions that are FREE for kids in October and start planning your trip. We’re already counting the down the days until our trip.
