Beach Inspired Cakes and Cupcakes

By: Dana Michele

Summer inspired cake and cupcake designs

The beach, flip flops, surfboards, Hawaiian flowers, palm trees, sailboats…all FUN summer themes for cakes and cupcakes for summer celebrations. Beach themed parties work for guys and gals of all ages.

  • Hawaiian or Luau themed with tropical flowers, shells, sea turtles, surfboards, flip flops
  • Beach themed with sand, toys, umbrellas, shells, sunglasses, beach balls, pinwheels
  • Sailboats, waves, life preservers
  • Shark themed with shark fins and ocean waves

Pink flip flop cake

Flip Flop cakes were one of my most popular Simply Sweets cake designs. Polka dots on the sides or a beach scene. Flip flops are made from fondant, shells are fondant or white chocolate. The sand is fun – use crushed graham crackers or Nilla wafers and add some crystal sugar.

1st birthday beach cake

Loved making this Beach-themed 1st Birthday cupcake tower. The cupcakes were topped with pinwheels, flip-flops, sunglasses, beach buckets and beach balls. So Fun!

1st birthday Hawaiian cupcake tower

Another favorite of mine is cupcakes topped with Hawaiian flowers – so colorful!

How to make edible sand

materials needed

  • graham crackers or Nilla wafers
  • white crystal sugar
  • food processor or a 1-gallon zip lock bag and mallet

Edible sand can be used on beach themed cakes, underwater or mermaid cakes, and sandcastles cakes. It easy to make and always a hit.

  1. Grind up graham crackers or Nilla wafers using either a food processor or place in a bag and smash with a mallet.
  2. Mix in white crystal sugar so the sand sparkles a bit

How to make edible seashells

materials needed

  • seashell chocolate molds
  • white melting chocolate (I prefer Guittard or Merkins)
  • pearl luster dust + optional metallic luster dusts
  • food sage fluffy brush

edible chocolate seashells

  1. Melt chocolate using a microwave and chocolate pot.
  2. Pour chocolate into molds (I use a spoon). Lightly tap the mold on the counter to remove bubbles
  3. Place in refrigerator to set. When set, remove and flip over tapping gently so the chocolate shells pop-out
  4. Use the brush to lightly apply luster dust to the shells. You can also use some darker metallic colors to add more detail to the shells
