I’m a busy single working mom with my mind always going in a million ways. Chore charts and daily routines have saved my sanity. My house is clean and sparkly and it makes me proud.
Being newly divorced, the transition was difficult but having a set daily routine meant I didn’t think about what needed to be done each day. My son also knew what needed to be done so he didn’t need me to tell him what to do. When life gets challenging, having routines in place helps your life to keep moving forward.
Step 1: Create a master list of all the chores Brainstorm a list of everything that needs to be done to keep your house looking great. Break these down to daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly chores and assign these to members of your household.
Step 2: Create a weekly routine chart for each person in the household Type up a list for each family member listing daily chores and those assigned to each day of the week.
Step 3: Print and hang the master list and the weekly chore lists I created a master chart which I hung on the wall in a frame – the glass frame allows me to use a dry erase marker to mark off the monthly, quarterly and annual chores. There’s a small hallway between my kitchen and living room/dining room that I’ve turned into a mudroom/command center. One side has hooks for coats and bags along with a bench. I’ve hung hooks for my car keys, incoming and outgoing mail slots, and chore charts.
Print out the list for each family member. I ran the sheets through my laminator – they will last longer and items can be checked off with a dry erase marker.
I bought clipboards for each list and hung on the wall with hooks. For an extra touch, I added a strip of colorful washi tape to each clipboard.
Step 4: Google Calendar I added my daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly chores to Google calendar using the repeat feature. I like having the printed version as a quick reference when doing chores, but I also like to have it in my digital calendar. Google calendar is my main scheduler for everything so I like to see my chores in the same place of everything else I have to do. I’ve created multiple calendars: Dana’s (personal), my son’s schedule (which his dad has access too), work, exercise, meal planning and chores. One awesome thing about google calendar is you can toggle a calendar on/off so I don’t need to always see my chores but its there when I want to view it.
Step 5: Cleaning Caddy Create the ultimate cleaning caddy so all your cleaning products are kept in one place and easy to carry to each room as needed. I live in Arizona and have two cats which means a LOT of dust. Also, my house is mostly decorated with dark wood, granite and slate floors which really shows the dust when the sun shines in. Routine cleaning with the right cleaners helps keep my house shiny and bright. I keep two caddies – one for upstairs and one for downstairs. This ensures cleaning supplies are always easily accessible. I’d recommend you to take a look at different suppliers like ElswoodsDirect.com to see if they have anything that will suit you, or if there are any cleaning supplies that you need.
