Summer Bucket List check in – making progress? having an awesome summer?
Our summer bucket list included ‘make cookies and share with neighbors’. My son loves to cook and it’s an awesome learning experience in so many ways including cooking skills, math and following directions (He’s 10). He’s also a gift giver – loves to make gifts for people. So I knew this would be a perfect summer bucket list activity.
Brownies got swapped for cookies – cookies, brownies, both delicious. We made Show Me the Yummy’s One Bowl Brownies together a few weeks ago and they were super simple and yummy. This time, my son was on his own. I bought enough ingredients for two batches just in case (which turned out to be a very smart move). I gave my son the recipe print-out and turned it over to him. Once the batch was baking, I checked on them and noticed they didn’t quite look right. After talking it over, we realized he forgot a few critical ingredients – oil, vanilla and some of the flour. Teaching opportunity – the importance of focusing and going through the instructions in order. He made a second batch and they turned out perfectly. I’m a strong believer in learning through experience with both successes and failures.
To make them 4th of July festive, my son added red, white and blue star sprinkles. Then we wrapped them on plates with festive ribbon (I helped with this part). All wrapped, he delivered them to the neighbors and was just over the top happy sharing a gift and loved the response from our neighbors – they’re still talking about the brownies every time they see him. A learning experience in so many ways:
