Overwhelmed by laundry? Piles of clothes to be washed on the floor by the laundry room? Piles to be put away piled high on your bed? Think you need to hire an industrial laundry service? I’ve teamed up with Sam’s Club‘s Member’s Mark® Ultimate Clean Laundry Cleaner to bring you these simple tips.
Tip #1: Create a 3 Hamper System
This was life changing for me.
Previously I had a single hamper in my closet and my son had his basket. When it came time to do laundry I would sort into 3 piles on the floor of the hallway near my laundry room. This creates a mess because it takes time to run all the loads through the laundry. And sometimes you might not finish that day, the pile sits until you have time to get to it. Every time you walk down the hallway you see the mess of stinky, dirty laundry.
My solution – 3 laundry hampers in my master closet. Each one is designated for the 3 loads of laundry I do each week: lights, darks, sheets & towels. Once a week, my son brings his hamper to my closet and sorts his laundry into the correct basket. On laundry day, I take the hampers to my laundry room when I’m ready to do a load. If a basket fills up before laundry day, I just run that load and laundry never becomes overwhelming. I have a large closet – if you closet space is limited find another place for the 3 hampers. I’ve seen 3 all-in-one 3 slot baskets for sorting but thats still an extra step. Also, the baskets are usually too small and the entire basket sitting out until all the laundry is complete.
I love my rolling hampers – they have a handle that raises and two wheels so I can roll the basket to my laundry room.
I created signs for each hamper and basket:
- I typed up my signs on my laptop
- Printed on 4″ x 6″ colored cardstock
- Ran them through my laminator (I love using my laminator for organizing my house – second to my label maker)
- Trimmed on my paper cutter
- Attach with adhesive velcro tabs
I have smaller baskets for handwash and dry cleaning.
Tip #2: Routine
I’ve found when I have routines, things get done. My home runs more efficiently and chores don’t feel as much like a ‘chore’. And when life gets crazy, I don’t need to think about what needs to be done, I just do it. For our household, laundry is done on Sundays and put away on Mondays. It works for us. Splitting the laundry process into two days makes it manageable.
Tip #3: Chore Charts
I’ve found chore charts are the perfect way to get the entire family on board. Everyone has a list of what needs to be done on what day so I save time by not having to tell my son what needs to be done each day. I have a chore chart for myself too as a quick reference so I keep on schedule.
Tip #4: Sort, distribute and delegate As laundry comes out of the dryer I immediately sort it into 3 baskets – one for myself, my son and one for the kitchen towels & napkins. I then place my son’s basket in his room for him to put away. The kitchen basket gets carried downstairs so it can be folded and put away.
And no I don’t folder all the laundry before it goes into each basket. Most of our clothes get hung on hangers and are relatively wrinkle resistant. Keep things simple.
The detergent can be found in the Laundry & Home Care aisle of Sam’s Club or ordered online. I picked up a container of Fresh Scent. It’s HE compatible, has superior performance and is a great value.
The Members Mark detergent is also available in Paradise Splash
Great tips! I like to keep things simple as well and enjoy learning how others do it. Thanks for sharing! #client
