I’m a big fan of the ‘shop local’ concept – its helps your local community and you often get better products and customer service. As a small business owner, I’m a member of Local First Arizona an organization that helps support and promote locally owned businesses in Arizona. On their website they have an excellent explanation of how shopping locally helps your community and they are promoting their Shift Arizona campaign where they are encouraging everyone to shift 10% of their spending to locally owned businesses.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting the Levitch family – they are a local Scottsdale family who has pledged to shop locally for one year and they’re documenting their experience on their blog, One Local Family. They are shifting 100% of their shopping to locally owned businesses – that can be tough and they’ve had some challenges finding sources for socks and hardware store items but so far they’re doing great and discovering many local businesses.
Now I do love Costco, Target, Trader Joes, Sprouts (which unfortunately is not locally owned anymore) and Anthropologie and it would be hard to give them up but I’m trying to support locally businesses as much as I can. It does take a little more effort to discover them because they’re often in smaller shopping centers and don’t have the huge marketing budgets that the big box stores have (like my own small business).
I’m starting a list of some of my favorite locally owned retail stores and I will revist this list periodically as I discover more great businesses
Do you have a favorite locally owned business I should check out?
